Matthappan an astray village youth is a thief and hence a butt of ridicule by the villagers. Frustrated Matthappan decides to commit suicide but the turn of events takes him to the temple of a Goddess situated in the middle of a forest. Mathappan steals the idol of theGoddess. While swimming across the river with the stolen idol, a tired Mathappan loses consciousness. When he wakes up, he finds himself lying safely at the bank of the river and the Goddess herself being present next to him. The Goddess follows him to his house and begins to stay with him. Slowly, through a series of comical incidents, the thief begins to change his behaviour and life. As he restores the local temple, the Goddess moves into the new temple and Mathappan is united with his girl friend Priyamani to lead a happy life.
